Microsoft Offers Windows Server 2003 R2 RC0 for Download
Posted by: jaye on Thursday, September 01, 2005 - 04:26 AM
Microsoft Windows Microsoft made the first release candidate for Windows Server 2003 R2, which is an update release of the Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 operating system, available via download Tuesday.

The code for RC0 (release candidate 0) can be downloaded from Microsoft Corp.'s Web site.

This is the first release candidate since the product was in beta, and will be followed by RC1, a Microsoft spokesperson told eWEEK.

The final Windows Server R2 code is scheduled for release by the end of 2005, and Microsoft officials say it brings improved branch office server solutions, identity and access management and storage management, and better enables application development inside and outside an organization's traditional boundaries.

Windows Vista Beta Has Peer-to-Peer System That Is On by Default
Posted by: jaye on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 06:43 AM
Microsoft Windows Windows Vista beta testers have found a flaw which turned out to be a peer-to-peer networking feature that is turned on by default; the tool connects to other beta machines as soon as an Internet connection is established. The vulnerability came to light when beta testers noticed unusually high levels of network traffic. The technology is a new version of Microsoft's Peer Name Resolution Protocol and was envisioned to enable users to make connections between Windows machines without a central server. A Windows project manager says Microsoft does not intend for the tool to be on by default when the project ships in late 2006. An earlier version of PNRP was included with Windows XP SP1, but was turned off by default. Some have observed that as Vista is a beta release; it should be run only in a test environment.
